TREES, SHRUBS SEEK OWNERS FOR A VERITABLE GROWTH INDUSTRY.(CAPITAL REGION)

Fledgling trees and shrubs are arriving in the Capital Region this month, looking for new soil to call home so they can begin cleaning the air, curbing erosion and providing food and shelter for wildlife.

But plantings are down this year by 40 percent in the Capital Region, say county soil and water conservation district managers. They point to the long winter and a preoccupation with war in Iraq for possibly keeping New Yorkers from working in their yards and buying trees and shrubs. With Earth Day today and Arbor Day coming up Friday, tree lovers are hoping for a turnaround.
